Do you need a permit for a deck or patio cover in San Antonio?
Yes, in most cases. Permits are issued by the City of San Antonio Development Services Department. A deck is exempt from a permit only if it meets all four conditions: 200 square feet or less, no more than 30 inches above grade, detached from the house, and not serving an exit door. Miss any one of those and you need a permit. Patio covers and structural pergolas normally require one either way.
